The Scottish Conservatives condemn the SNP for “recklessly opposing” Trident, at a time when global instability means it’s more important than ever to have a nuclear deterrent.
Scottish Conservative deputy leader and shadow secretary for the constitution and external affairs Meghan Gallacher said: “The Scottish Conservatives are the only party truly committed to retaining our nuclear deterrent – along with the 11,000 jobs it supports in and around Faslane.
“Global security is as fragile today as it has been in decades, given Russia’s appalling invasion of Ukraine and the deepening conflict in the Middle East.
“Now, more than ever, we require the security of a nuclear deterrent, and yet the SNP recklessly oppose Trident, while many in Scottish Labour and in Keir Starmer’s front bench team – including his deputy, Angela Rayner – share their hostility.
“They would happily put our national security at risk and threaten livelihoods across Scotland.
Keith Cockburn, Scottish Conservative Candidate for Midlothian said: "The world is facing increasingly credible threats from dangerous leaders in Russia, Iran, North Korea and others.
Our nuclear deterrent on the Clyde has arguably never been more important in this uncertain world.
Not only is it crucial for thousands of jobs which benefit the whole of Scotland's economy including Midlothian's it is also vital for our national security.
I'm the only candidate on the ballot paper in this constituency who is fully committed to standing up for our nuclear deterrent and the benefits it brings.
We know the SNP would get rid of it overnight and put thousands of livelihoods at risk, while Labour's frontbench is full of figures who have opposed it.
Only myself and the Scottish Conservatives are unwavering in their support for our nuclear deterrent."
Councillor Pauline Winchester, Midlothian Armed Forces and Veterans Champion echoed the comments made by citing the impact of 6,500 jobs in the various sectors supporting the Armed Forces at HMNB Clyde, some of which extend to industries here in Midlothian.
