CRAIG Hoy, a Conservative MSP for South Scotland, has met with representatives from St David’s Brass Band at Vogrie Hall in Gorebridge to discuss ongoing work by the band to renovate the hall.
In January last year, the UK Government awarded the band £127,251 as part of its Levelling Up programme. The funding was delivered through the government’s Community Ownership Fund, which will allow the building to open once again, providing a boost to local people through community events and activities.
The 1930s building in the heart of Midlothian was once a hub at the heart of the local community but was forced to close in 2020 due to the need for urgent refurbishment estimated to cost in the region of £537,495.
St David’s Brass Band acquired the property from Midlothian Council for £100,000 on 28 June 2023 and raised around £538,000 for repair work to the hall.
With increasing demand for space in Gorebridge, the hall will support community groups from the town and across Midlothian following its renovation.
Craig Hoy MSP said: “I warmly welcome the refurbishment of Vogrie Hall which will provide a space for community groups from across Midlothian to benefit from.
“The enthusiasm of St David’s Brass Band in restoring the hall to its former glory is inspiring, and I can’t wait to see the hall reopen its doors.”
Alistair Taylor, Secretary of St David’s Brass Band, commented: “St David’s Brass Band was delighted to welcome Craig Hoy (MSP) to Vogrie Hall in Gorebridge. During his visit, three members of the band were able to show him around the property and explain in detail the various elements of the refurbishment programme. It was also an opportunity to outline the band’s proposals for the use of the facility once it is renovated.
“The finished building will provide the band with its first permanent home, and can now look forward to developing its activities, especially within the Youth Section. The band will also be pleased to encourage other groups to use the facility so that Vogrie Hall will be a valuable community asset once again.
“Mr Hoy showed a keen interest in the project and the band members were greatly encouraged by his offer of continued support in the venture.”
